As much as Rian Johnson works to subvert the mystery genre, he still fails to make a movie that I'll ever feel compelled to watch again, and that's the main flaw with standard mystery movies. I appreciate the social commentary wrapped into the plot, but the individual characters are empty vessels, talking boxes for class commentary that one should already be familiar with. Regardless, I liked seeing the story play out the way it does. The mystery is hardly the actual point, that's made abundantly clear from the jump, but it still constrains the narrative, which makes a rewatch very unappealing. I wish de Armas' character had more grit, so many lowerclass+minority characters are made as soft and sympathetic as possible to make the film more palatable for those searching for 'the good ones' of any stigmatic group (in this case, the illegal immigrant) - its ironic and disappointing that this film reproduces that stock figure. I'm only negative, because this went in the right direction while avoiding any bold statements. It was a good time, well shot, well dressed, humorous, and occasionally thoughtful.
